Newsletter 48

If you are reading our newsletter for the first time ... welcome to BairnsTrust as a new member. If you wish to review some of our previous newsletters they can be visited at this section of the website...

The Trust take this opportunity to thank all for joining for the new season and appreciate all those that made a donation to the contingency fund, too many to mention individually, but very much appreciated. It has been assumed that all under 16s that have joined have done so with full parental/guardian consent.

You are cordially invited to attend the Annual General Meeting in the Warm Up Area of the Falkirk Community Stadium on Mon 21st April 2008, KO 7.30pm. There will be no Monthly Meeting as a result.

There will be a full agenda for discussion, but if you have any concerns you wish to raise, please respond to either bairnstrust@hotmail.co.uk or post your query on the message board at our website and we will try to cover on the night.

If you are unable to attend, the Minutes from the meeting will appear on our website later for your perusal here ...

All on the Trust Committee offer “get well soon” messages to our colleague Jack Gardiner following his recent operation. Jack is heavily involved on a matchday helping the Former Players Association guests and is also the Boardroom barman.

The 2008 BairnsTrust AGM will take place on Monday 21/04/08 in the Warm-Up area of the Falkirk Stadium, 7.30pm.

BairnsTrust still have a vacancy that requires to be filled on the Committee for the position of Secretary. Current Committee Members have had temporary spells covering the role alongside their own duties. If you wish to be co-opted to this office-bearer post, please feel free to attend the AGM on Mon 21/04/08 or make your intentions known by email to bairnstrust@hotmail.co.uk

The Trust was again seeking candidates for the Committee and nominations for the new Associate Director/Trust Rep on the FFC Board have closed. This post was open to any current member of the Trust, regardless of previous history or involvement in your Trust. Following the "Hustings" discussion on Mon 17/03/08 in the Warm-Up area of the Falkirk Stadium, the two candidates Brian Guthrie and Tom Paterson staked their claims and now eagerly await the voting result. Ballot papers were sent out along with the full AGM documentation after Monday 24/03/08, with Ballot papers to be returned at the latest by Monday 21/04/08, 7pm to the Scrutineer when the result will be announced before the AGM commences. Many thanks to our friends at the Falkirk Matchday Programme and the Falkirk Herald who have been able to find space in their publications to insert advertisement of our AGM and the two candidate’s electoral statements.

The Agenda for the AGM will be along similar lines to previous years now confirmed as:

1) Chairperson's opening remarks

2) Ratification of previous (AGM) minutes

3) Matters arising from previous (AGM) minutes

4) Chairperson's annual report

5) Secretary's annual report

6) Treasurer's annual report

7) Fans Directors annual report

8) Social Convenor's annual report

9) Election of office bearers/Committee members

10) Election of fans representative to the board of Falkirk FC

11) Constitutional amendments

12) Open Forum

13) Any other business

14) Date of next (AGM) meeting

The Trust now has the returned, signed, copy of the BairnsTrust "2007 Annual Accounts” with grateful thanks from our Independent Examiner. This new style of reporting on the Trust's finances was passed at our last AGM, similar to that adopted by a number of other Trusts and has been ratified by the Financial Services Authority. The position of Independent Examiner can be carried out by anyone with a financial background, not necessarily qualified and would simply be reviewing the set of financial statements already produced by the Trust Treasurer for the financial year ended 30/09/07. Copies of said Independent Examination will be available on the night of the AGM to attendees and thereafter made available to any member who requests a copy by your preferred contact method below.

Your BairnsTrust Treasurer has been contacted by our colleagues at Shiretrust to now undertake their own Independent Exam for the year ended 31/12/07 and negotiations are at an advanced stage. Similarly, your Vice-Chairman has been approached by the Shiretrust to act as Scrutineer for their forthcoming elections, reciprocating the Shiretrust Committee Member who is covering our own election.

BairnsTrust were delighted to have James Proctor attend a Trust Committee Meeting on the evening of Thu 28/02/08, donating 90 minutes of his free time to advise and answer our queries on Resolution 2 out of the Falkirk FC AGM. Have now received a Supporters Direct view and we are now fully versed to take forward when the club announce the revamped Resolution.

Phil French the London based Chief Executive of Supporters Direct has recently left the position. All at BairnsTrust wish him well and thank for his assistance over the years. The vacancies section of the Supporters Direct website is always a good read if you have ever considered working in a football orientated job …

The latest edition of the Supporters Direct magazine is now out ... In this issue, Phil French pens his last column as Chief Executive following his departure for DCMS to work alongside former Supporters Direct Chair and Secretary of State, Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP. The cover story is Brentford's final steps to Lionel Road, whilst in the SD Scotland section hear how the Scottish Government and MSPs have been recognising the work of the trust movement North of the Border. Hugh Robertson, the Conservative Shadow Sports Minister pens a piece about Tory policy towards supporters' trusts & football - look out for similar articles from other political figures in the future, and Malcolm Clarke, the FA Council Representative for supporters is also interviewed. With further news and features on a major project being co-ordinated by SD, plus a new look to the publication, hope you enjoy the magazine. If you want to subscribe to receive a copy in the post, contact Supporters Direct or through BairnsTrust at bairnstrust@hotmail.co.uk

On Sunday 06/04/08 one “experienced” and one “new” member of your Trust appointed Committee Members attended a new Supporters Direct Board Member Training Day at Broadwood Stadium the home of Clyde FC from 10am to 4pm. This has proved invaluable especially for the “new” Committee Member and some interesting tips were noted that will be implemented over the coming months.

The Trust wholeheartedly agreed with the Aberdeen free buses provided by Falkirk FC for the Mon 07/04/08 game at Pittodrie and this gesture was generously accepted by the various FFC Bus Convenors. Those who were unable to travel enjoyed another successful Amarillo promotion night showing the game live on the big screen complete with food and refreshment. Another Manager is in place within the Amarillo but BairnsTrust retains our connection with them and these popular big game TV events involving Falkirk, Scotland and Champions League games will continue.

Our Trinidad Trust members were delighted to note the way Falkirk FC stepped in to assist and tie up an agreement with CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh when they arrived in the country recently. Subsequent press highlighted the excellent treatment they received from both Falkirk FC and Mr Latapy. There is an announcement on a forthcoming glamour match that the BairnsTrust hope to be heavily involved. More details will follow soon.

The Trust has some great fundraising ideas for next season. We are able to exchange ideas and opportunities with a number of other clubs.

We now have a tie in with :

Ebbsfleet United who are on their way to Wembley in the FA Trophy Final on Sat 10/05/08 have a good money raising item in place this year that BairnsTrust wish to adopt next season. Watch this space.

Blackpool Supporters Association. Regular monthly newsletters are received from the Seasiders and they have just concluded a popular time of goal/lottery number game and balloon race that we may mirror.

Dundee Dee4Life pre match bus hospitality has been a popular enjoyment for Falkirk fans travelling to games at Tannadice. BairnsTrust have already sourced a local hostelry to run a similar scheme but require more matchday volunteers to staff.

East Stirlingshire ShireTrust now supplies annually a Scrutineer for our own elections and we participate in their close season Quiz Nights. Both Committees meet at the numerous Supporters Direct events where we share experiences.

Scotland Travel Club and associated tour package companies and constantly review merchandising ideas from these bodies.

Watch for some of the above being implemented throughout next season and keep your calendar free.

The Scottish FA is inviting all players between 12-18 years of age a chance to win prizes and show off their skills at this year’s Scottish Cup Final on Saturday 24/05/08. If you are in this age range yourself or know someone who is, simply click this link and upload footage of your/their football skills for a chance to win this sensational prize ... Entries can also be made by e-mailing the footage to, or attending your local Bank of Scotland Midnight League or Bank of Scotland Soccer One Centre or posting a DVD of the footage to Street Skills, Scottish FA, Hampden Park, Glasgow, G42 9AY. Closing date for entries is Thursday 15/05/08. Footage received will be used as promotional material and on Scottish FA websites. Any footage received without consent will be destroyed within 3 months of receipt.

The BairnsTrust Former Player Association is still being well attended by the ex-players from the past appearing in Amarillo Lounge. They will be there to meet and greet you and reminisce about their spells at the club. Recent attendees include ...

Various questions are fielded by the Trust between meetings and they are duly discussed and taken to the highest level in the Club for response. If you have a matter that requires the club to investigate further, contact the Trust in the first instance via bairnstrust@hotmail.co.uk

As the start of the Falkirk Supporters Buses Player of the Year “season” commences, BairnsTrust are delighted to be involved at many. Already the FSA and Roman Bar events have been carried off successfully and Elliot’s will be on Sat 26/04/08 in the Graeme Hotel after the St Mirren game. Contact the Bus Convenor for more details. If any further events wish publicised please email bairnstrust@hotmail.co.uk so its inclusion can be considered.

Falkirk FC's No1 supporter's team Bairnfica AFC will be playing Dunfermline supporters at East End Park on Sat 03/05/08, kick off 11am. This is a free weekend due to Falkirk’s switch for Setanta TV of our home game v Heart of Midlothian. Why not go along and support them on the day so that they can win the cup being awarded. £2 entry for adults and free for kids U16. All supporters will be housed in the Main Stand and turnstiles open form 10.30am onwards. There will be catering facilities including bacon and sausage rolls for sale on the day. At the end of the match, each player from both teams will receive a medal for taking part, as well as the winning team being presented with the trophy. The presentation will take place upstairs in the Legends Bar after the match. For more details visit the teams home website page

Another date for your diary is Bairnfica’s Player of the Year Night on Sat 29/05/08 at the Masonic Hall, Lint Riggs, Falkirk. Along with the trophy presentations, there will be a Race Night, raffle and auction along with a fantastic buffet. Tickets are available now from squad members.

BairnsTrust established a good working relationship with the Linlithgow Rose Danny Smith Testimonial Committee ahead of the game last Sun 13/04/08 at Prestonfield, Linlithgow. Having missed the deadline for inclusion in the Falkirk Matchday Programme v Kilmarnock on Saturday 22/03/08, we were able to get noticed announced over the Public Address system pre-match. The electronic poster advert had been on the main page of the BairnsTrust website at … www.bairnstrust.com and Falkirk FC heavily promoted on their main website following our passing details on to them. Falkirk fans messageboard’s were also buzzing with the topic.

We have been able to secure unique after-match photography of the day and BairnsTrust are the sole holder of the exclusive commemorative teamsheeet produced. If you wish to procure a copy, please visit the Trust Matchday stall at the remain three home games or email your details to bairnstrust@hotmail.co.uk

Why not visit the matchday stall for our “Discount Sale” where all programmes, including this season, are now only £1 each and you can still uplift your free BairnsTrust A4, colour, 2008 calendar. Just bring along your membership card. Also for our under 16 members you can collect a free "bargain bundle" of old matchday programmes. Again just bring along your membership card.

We received recent communication from an exiled Gretna supporter living in Shropshire seeking old Falkirk v Gretna programmes as well as this Saturday 19/04/08's publication. Sold at above cover price, all monies made go straight to Trust funds.

The Trust had one spare Scotland v Georgia friendly programme available but was snapped up within 10 minutes of going on matchday stall. Falkirk’s Scotia Bar Scotland Travel Club is now a recommended establishment for those fans seeking travel arrangement to both home and away fixtures. Contact BairnsTrust at bairnstrust@hotmail.co.uk for contact details of the Bus Convenor.

If you currently watch the games from the temporary stand, we are desperate to get over there to spread the BairnsTrust word and display the products we have for sale. However the logistics of moving stock from and back to the main stand before kick-off prove inhibitive. If there is any specific item/programme you require we can get to you at your convenience, simply inform before the next game by email to bairnstrust@hotmail.co.uk

We have recently doubled our stock of programmes and now cover each season back to the early nineties. Get your "wants" list prepared and see if we can assist. To allow more time to peruse our collection, the stall on the concourse is now open at half-time. Visit our online shop that has the NEW stock list of all our programmes for browsing ...

The programmes for sale at the stall are received by generous donations from numerous persons and are not from hospitality as has been suggested. The Trust gratefully acknowledge donations from the private collections of J Gardiner, P Mosson, C Christie, M Ritchie, D Paterson, A Totten, P Kidney and periodically from matchday staff, BairnsTrust Members and Committee. Such gestures are much appreciated and provide the Trust with a valuable income stream.

Falkirk FC has allowed BairnsTrust to become an Official Matchday Programme vendor using our stall on the concourse in the Main Stand at home games as the point of sale. We will cater for those who wish to buy INSIDE the Stadium pre-match and in return the Trust will receive the standard “seller’s fee” in return. This is proving a great success so far. We urge Members to purchase their copy from the stall to allow the Club to monitor how successful and necessary this point of sale is.

The Trust's own UEFA Champions League Fantasy Football Competition now into the semi-final stage. All change at the top with The Navy Blue now leading, but have Barhigdon and Calibairn within 10 points and in hot pursuit. The table will be posted on the message board after every round of games and will hopefully create more interest in our messageboard at the same time. As a result participants receive regular, emailed magazines direct from UEFA.

LATE NEWS: The Trust are fully aware of the debate re a potential "Stadium Development Petition" as well as the scrapping of £3M of academy funding and the demise of the facilities for the young footballers from Syngenta. Before the Trust is able to decide on a path to take on these issues, require your comments and campaign suggestions. Please feel free to attend the AGM on Monday 21/04/08 or if unable, submit your concerns for review by email to bairnstrust@hotmail.co.uk
